Significance and Irony
Significance
The significance of the Cleric in the time period it was written in, wasn't too out of the ordinary thing for a king to do. Back then in that society, people acted very strange and did very odd things for strange reasons in our opinion. What the cleric did with his kids and his wife in our minds was pretty weird and not right, but then that was something that was a normal thing and things like that happened all the time. Now in modern times, this would be a very unheard of and cruel thing to do to a spouse. People these days “date” for a time period to see if the other is going to be right for him or her. You go through that process to make sure they are right and going to be good, you don't just marry them right when you see them. Another thing is that people don't pick people to get married it is there choice. What the king did would not happen in this day and age.
Irony
A good point of irony in this text is a dramatic type. The king takes his kids telling his wife that he was going to kill them. Little did she know that he just sent them to a relatives place for a while just to test his wife's honor and commitment to him.
